My stove has down draft vent. I don't want to re-model my home to punch holes through ceiling and walls. I just want to put a hood on top of it and let the down draft work it's stupid design.

Default ?

If it something like a Jenn-Air, you do not need a hood to make the vent work... unless I am missing something. My stove is a Jenn-Air down draft, it works great, but not so quiet.

You cannot defy physics.

I don't know who dreamed up the down draft type kitchen vent, but it's a stupid design.

The reason is that hot air is lighter and goes up. Most kitchen smoke and air are hot air. With all the open space above the stove, a small down draft suction is not going to be anywhere near efficient unless you put a HUGE blower that is equivalent of jet engine.
