A reputable pet/ bird store will not sell imported birds (it is illegal). Adventures in Birds breeds most of their own birds. Otherwise, once you decide on the parrot, there are many breeders in the area. Google is your friend.

mayor bill white is your best bet, he can repeat perfectly that the 130,000 he brought to houston from new orleans are hurricane victims and are our friends.

We have an African Grey we brought him 5 years ago when he was just a few months old. I did loads of research on line for local breeders talked to lots of them and finally brought him from a lady who had been breeding birds for years.
If you buy from a pet shop make sure you ask lots of questions.
Charlie has never made that loud noise that most Greys make - remember that noise as my Father had one when I was younger.
He talks sings and is very intelligent even rolls over like the dogs !!!
Whenever someone is leaving the house he knows to say bye and at about 10.30pm every night starts saying "goodnight"
But as everone else has said they do live a very long time, also are a one person bird. Charlie will sit with my Husband but nobody else - even though I feed him and talk to him if I try to hold him he will try to bite me.
Good luck

You need to do LOTS of research on each species. There are many. Some are VERY loud. All need flying time and fresh food and good foods of all kinds. BIG cages and many toys too.

You can get great advice on Parrot Forums like The Perch. Breeders are the best way to get a parrot. You do have to research first.

I have a Parrotlet, a very small and quiet parrot.

I recommend:

1) Cockatiel - the male whistles and talk, very easy to care for, affortable, and quite.

2) Halfmoon Conure - Very small parrot with big parrot personality. Can talk and very playful

3) Quaker Parrot - Great talker and small.

4) Budgies - Cheap, easy to care for, quite, and very small.

Please research all about cages. Stores sell SMALL cages. Ordering online is best. They need big cages with the right bar spacing.

There are some pros and cons about quaker parrot. Yes, they are great talkers, but they are often one person birds, meaning loyal to one owner and aggressive toward EVERYONE else. Another thing to consider is that they can be loud. Maybe not as loud as sun conures, but definately louder than cockatiels.

Have you checked with the SPCA or other rescue orgs? Looks like they just grabbed quite a few birds...should be up for adoption in about 14 days if the judge doesn't give them back to the owner.

Thumbs up A great place to get a parrot and parrot supplies

When I first moved to Houston I was very excited to find the name of a great Parrot Store on the discussion board. It was Adventures in Birds. I went there hoping to find a store equal to the one I left behind in New Orleans but instead found something uniquely better. This is a family owned business that has been loving and breeding birds for about 30 years. The store is more like visiting a treasure chest of bird supplies and toys and the birds are on view and very approachable - from in the nest ( nursery babies ) to young sweet hand feed and ready to go home. They also have a large number of unusual and large parrots. I have since purchased to wonderful parrots and untold amounts of toys and special foods. This is my favorite store in Houston!!!
