Houston Builders (Sienna Plantation: credit, home builders, buying)

In your opinion....are there builders that are known for being dependable and good...and others you should avoid like the plague???

This is a very difficult question to answer, as broad as it is. You've given us no idea if you are looking for a starter home, custom home, million dollar mansion?

You will get better replies if you narrow down your question. For example, "I am thinking about buying in Toxic Tree Estates, what builders are there?". Or "Anyone know anything about Limpid Wood Builders?".

One last caveat: This is a very tough time for home builders. The economic/credit crisis has driven many of them to the brink. In the last few weeks, several big names have shut their door, and many more are very close. Do your homework, check with this forum, maybe even ask for a vendor list and then check a few of those vendors to make sure your builder is paying his bills. Or check with his bank. You really don't want to buy a home from a builder who goes belly-up the next day.

Sorry...Specfically...Homes in Sienna Plantation...we would like to stay around 250,000...maybe a little less. I know you can buy or build so I am curious about the builders.

I would like to know if some are more reputable than others and if some are going under.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of building versus buying?

I think Ryland Homes and Meritage Homes are 2 that are building alot in my price range.

Plantation Homes and Ashton Woods Homes look to be over 250,000.

Everyone told me to avoid KB homes like the plague. Our realtor refused to show any of these to us.

My David Weekley has held up nicely. Didn't lose one shingle during the hurricane.

KB homes do have a horrible reputation.

I know several people with Ashton Woods homes and they have nothing but good things to say about them.

Well I bought used, circa mid-90s. Except for realtors, there were no cheap salesmen.

If they're all built this way from this era, I still say it's worth a look...

Do a google with each builder you are intrested with "Comments", 'Feedback" OR "review" concantenated to the builder's name. If it does not show up any matches that may be indication that they are not bad.

Generally, people post comments when they have bad expereince.

Both Meritage and Ashton Woods get mostly positive reviews on here. Dunno anything about Ryland or Plantation.
