We live in New Territory near the corner of Alt 90A and Ellis Creek in Sugar Land. On that corner, a tree took out a couple of power poles and something that keeps being referred to as "a box." Someone in my neighborhood called Centerpoint and they said that the box would take 1-4 weeks to fix.

Can someone please explain this to me? Do you think they really meant it takes that long to repair or replace this box or do you think that they just tell everyone 1-4 weeks because that is the default answer?

Power has been restored all around our neighborhood so it seems like this problem at this one corner is really delaying a restoration of power for us.

We are probably leaving this Austin hotel tomorrow and coming home so I'm fishing for any information to help me figure out how long we'll be living in a house without power.

Standard response. expensive hard to replace 'boxes' don't have trees beside them.
note that people maybe returning their generators to the rental stores now

I didn't even know you could rent a generator. Any suggestions about places with availability would be welcome as I will probably start researching this now.

I see that people on Craig's List are selling a bunch of them but I've grown a bit leery of Craig's List since the recent news coverage of armed robberies in Texas.

homedepot/lowes have tool rental department. Sunbelt rentals and National rentals provide the service so their main branches should have better stock. i checked their website and it says it costs about $115 per week for a 3800w unit

Topaz, if you do get a generator, and are stuck without power for awhile, I have a window AC unit you can borrow if you want. You aren't too far away from me and I'm happy to help anyone, in any way I can. Also if you just want to bring the kids up and hang out for a few hours for a change of pace that'd be fine too. All my evacuees went back to their homes today, I still have a fair amount of water and soda and juice and beer.

wysiwyg and sbhubbell, you are both wonderful. sbhubbell, I will look for a generator and if I find one, I will definitely take you up on that offer of the window AC and the change of scenery. If I don't find a generator, then I might be seeking just the change of scenery as my house will not be any fun if the weather heats up again.

Check out this truly bizarre Craig's List ad: Adult DVD's sealed in wrapper will trade for generator (Magnolia, TX) (http://houston.craigslist.org/bar/842331187.html - broken link).

In San Antonio, I searched several stores (Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.) last Saturday, but no luck. However, I went to Sears and they had 18 portable generators, so I bought one and took it to my daughter's family north of Houston. Try Sears in Austin and I heard Costco's had some here and may have some in Austin. Good Luck!
