My family and I are moving to Houston from west Texas, I am originally from southeast Texas so I am a little familiar with the Houston area already. I do not know about the school districts and that will help determine where we are going to be looking. I have two kids who will be in 1st and 5th grade. I am looking for great schools that have not become over crowded, where teachers still belive in what they do and enjoy it, and would like the surrounding neighborhoods to be family friendly. There are so many different opinions here it is hard to sort through. The few I have heard that are good districts are Katy (but becomming over crowded), Klein, Cy-Fair, Kingwood?? If anyone could send some suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. My husband doesn't seem to be much concerned with his commute as he is regarding our childrens education and a family oriented area in which to live. We have family in Spring and would like to be close to them, but have not heard anything good about the Spring School district?? Also have friends moving to League City, but don't know much about the surrounding areas? Thanks.

Why don't you consider the Woodlands? That's pretty close to Spring.

It's recommended that people live close to work, then you can figure out where to live in the area. Perhaps that would be an exception if you plan to visit your family in Spring or friends in League City almost daily. But most people are busy in and around Houston. And League City is a long way from Spring. Tell us more details for better answers.

I lived in The Woodlands when my daughter was in day care and I can tell you that this was about 6 years ago and back then, I heard mixed reviews on the schools there. It is a safe area that is gorgeous and a great place to live, but I'm not sure how the schools really are. I would suggest taking a trip over to The Woodlands and eating lunch and dinner out there and going to the mall and trying to talk to people in the area that have school-age kids. That is the best way to find out.
Good luck!

We love Katy! The schools (stay on the south side) are absolutely excellent! Great neighborhoods and beautiful enviornment. I commute to the west side of Houston in 25 minutes.

Unfortunately Katy is rather ugly and featureless.

It's hot as hell in Houston when you haven't any shade.

Soccermom...Family in Spring...uhm... sounds like Klein District would be a good fit. Just stay away from Klein Forest High...pulls in some rough neighborhoods. From what I'm told Spring School District is lacking-Westfield High is also rough, Woodlands public schools remain strong (spent a year teaching at the John Cooper School-private) smaller classes...good teachers...expensive, Cy-fair is huge, and Kingwood... I have no clue. Anyone know much about Kingwood schools. Happy hunting...Sunny

You can live in Spring, but be in the Klein ISD. I d not comlpetely understand it - but when we lived in Wimbledon Estates (so/so houses only because they are older...) our address was Spring, but we were zoned to great Klein schools. Great area.

Parts of Katy are pretty hum-drum in terms of landscaping (at least, compared to the rest of the metropolitan area) due to the greater proliferance of flat, treeless prairieland (think Frisco, TX but without the hills) but some parts are very attractive, such as Kelliwood, Grand Lakes, Cinco Ranch and parts of Seven Meadows.
