So my wife and I are searching for homes in the Sugar Land, Pearland, Katy area and have found a couple houses in our price range (150-175k) in Tara. My question is, can anyone give me any concrete information on that area? It seems to have a bad reputation on here, but I'm curious specifically why? It is zoned to good schools (we have 2 young children) and otherwise doesn't seem too bad, but we are coming from out of state. Can anyone tell me any more about the area? TIA!

Drug raid in Fort Bend subdivision nabs 5 suspects - Houston Chronicle

The homes in the Tara subdivision were built in the late 80's, at at a time when they didn't always use the best of materials, the hot and humid environment here is tough on composite building materials, and many of the homes are showing their age.

While many homeowners have kept up their homes, others have not, and so driving around in Tara, you do encounter some homes in rough shape. That tends to hold down the value of the whole neighborhood.

This. Unfortunately the poor reputation is not without merit. Zoned to great schools but there are better options for just a little more.

We are also looking in Pheasant Creek. Would that be a better option if we can find something? Also zoned to great schools.

I don't think Tara is a bad choice in that budget, however I do believe Pearland has more choices and better neighborhoods in this price bracket. Someone more familiar with Pearland can cite specific neighborhoods.

I would just check it out more carefully in person. If you like that particular neighborhood, why not? Don't expect to get useful info from people who never lived there. A lot of responses on this forum are based on stereotypes. And there is so much negativity here. Just better do your own research. And don't forget that even the best products get certain amount of 1* reviews on internet. Your own judgement can be totally different.

Normally I would agree. However, I lived in Greatwood for 18 years; delivered food for 9'ers on Crabb River Road for 2 summers. Nearly got jumped by a couple of nare-do-wells when I was 16 on a delivery run to Tara because they were waiting for some other guy in a truck to bash over the head with a lead pipe (thankfully they saw the 9'ers food in my hand and backed down). I had friends who lived in Tara - they will tell you the same thing. There are nice, wonderful families who keep up their yard, take pride in home ownership, and keep to themselves; likewise, there are people who aren't as interested in upkeep and the neighborhood in general suffers as result.

My point is, when there are other options available in the area and the OP isn't necessarily looking at just this neighborhood, why not look elsewhere?

Well I just googlemapped that neighborhood and yes I definitely see it's not the place I would be excited to live in.
And especially if you are familiar with the area that's valuable input. But typically most replies here are not so informative as yours

I’ve delivered food for a few years in the area as well. Tara was hit and miss.

I ran a search on HAR.com in that subdivision for rentals properties leased in the past 12 months and the result came back with a very high number of rental units. I would take that into consideration when buying a home in any subdivision.
