I know a lot of people are mentioning the 59 corridor based on your initial posts but have you thought about staying a little more in the city? North of I-10 inside the beltway wouldn't be a terrible commute to HBU and would be much closer to the city for sporting events.
Won't get acreage and the houses will be older but many are on good sized lots with established shade trees. This one is under contract but is representative of what you could get for that budget.

Some people will immediately put the schools down but I think they are decent and parent involvement has as much to do with child success as school funding and demographics.
