Greetings. I'm a guy and I've accepted a job working outside field sales insurance agents, most of whom dress casually. I know that Houston is VERY HOT and humid during the Summer months. Would cotton dress pants and long sleeve cotton shirts be OK? Should I stay away from wool dress pants? Short sleeve shirts OK during the summer?

I find lightweight wool to be more comfortable than cotton for trousers, and it looks better for longer without cleaning. The wool breathes better than cotton. There is no such thing as a short sleeve dress shirt, so I would stick with long sleeves. Wear an undershirt to prevent ugly sweat stains, if you are prone to sweating.

If you can afford it, linen pants are the coolest. I would think that golf shirts may be appropriate but you'll have to see. Maybe the first day wear a long sleeved cotton shirt just to be safe.

Will have to disagree on linen slacks or linen anything in Houston's humidity. You will appear as having slept in your slacks within a hour. Also disagree with polo shirt if you are trying to make a professional impression. Long sleeve dress shirt, dress slacks. Get the tempo and dress code of the office then adjust up or down. Hopefully it will be a tad down as Houston does get warmer and more humid as spring moves forward. Only one chance to make a first impression. It is better if you overdress than appear too casual, at least in my opinion.

Long sleeve dress shirt, wool dress pants, no jacket for business casual.

Pressed khaki's, polo style shirt for casual.

A lot depends on your employer. You always want to look professional. Dress for success.

It also depends in what field - I know engineers tend to do business casual unless you're in top management.

AFAIK sales tends to be more formal

Go with nice slacks and button up shirts for a while when you get there. But I bet at some point, you'll start seeing guys wearing polos/golf shirts...at least on Fridays. Then change your attire accordingly.
