Apparently he is waiving his fee. Very noble on his part.
Well, that's good to hear.

Either he quickly backpedaled regarding the fee, or speakers routinely waive their fees for commencements. Don't know which is the common practice. I do know that speakers who make the circuit are usually represented by agents who negotiate on their behalf. I was on a student commitee that brought in big name speakers, including one that charged a six figure fee (a lot of money 20+ years ago). You basically just looked through the speaker catalog, contacted their agent and went back and forth a while, as you would with any negotiation.

They paid Matthew McConaughey $135k last year. He donated all but $5k to the Just Keep Living Foundation.

I'm a UH alum and I don't mind them having him as commencement speaker, even tho' I'm not particularly in tune with him politically.

What I do like about having him is that (1) he has always been an achievement-oriented person and perhaps that aspect of him can help inspire others and (2) it will generate a certain amount of PR buzz, which UH promoters might find useful. Frankly, I'm surprised that he would command a fee less than 1/3 of McConaghey's.

Seems like a good investment for the entire area. People who may not have attended the ceremony may now come to see him. Which means more hotels, mor restaurants, etc... will get a piece of the pie.

I would argue that UH is ahead of Tech in many respects. http://uhsystem.edu/chancellor/plann...ort%202012.pdf

Hard to compare it to Baylor, because that is sort of apples/oranges. Baylor's stats are artificially boosted by the 10% rule - lots of kids with good SAT scores who are not in the top 10% because they are from competitive high schools wind up at places like Baylor, TCU, etc.

IMO, UH's peers are schools like Cincinatti, San Diego State, UCF, and USF. I believe all of these are ranked ahead of UH by US News, but they have similar roles and missions.
