I'll be in Houston in a couple of weeks - would love to know what's good! I'm staying at The Houstonian, if that makes any difference in terms of distance, time, accessibility, etc.

Also, I'm really looking forward to touring the Fine Arts Museum and the Galleria, but do y'all have any other recommendations for me? I wouldn't mind visiting NASA or the Natural Science Museum, but those seem like they will be tough to get to from my hotel.

Thanks so much for your input!

Visit all the Museums, including the Cistern at Buffalo Bayou, the Old Downtown Houston Public Library, and eat some Niko Nikos at Discovery Green.

You can literally just say in the loop and do most of your sightseeing and later venture out for a day or two to see NASA or Galveston.

The Museums alone will take a couple days if you're looking to take your time and tour them thoroughly.

I forgot to mention the best Mexican food. It's not the Tex Mex, which is good but doesn't compare to the real Mexican food in town. Try Cuchara in Montrose. Hugo's also in Montrose. Cuchara is really, really good food from Mexico City.

Unless you want to do some shopping, I'm not sure the Galleria is all that alluring. It's just a really big mall. OTOH, you are staying right down the street from it.

If you want to see the MFA, I would suggest the Menil Collection as well.

That Cistern idea is an interesting one. I've been wanting to go there myself. I believe it requires reservations in advance, it's not particularly accessible for those with disabilities, and small kids aren't allowed. Just some things to keep in mind.

Try the new shops built close to the Galleria. I forgot what that shopping area is called but it's nice. There's a French cafe there I've been wanting to try next time I am in town.

River Oaks District. On Westheimer between Kettering and Mid Lane, where Central Ford used to be back in the day. Several good restaurants. I'm particular to Le Colonial, which is Vietnamese with the French Colonial decor. I want to say the French Cafe is called Toulouse. Never been there.

That French Cafe was straight out of Cannes. It looked a lot like the little cafes along the coast I saw while in France. I almost did a double take, they made it look so nice.

There's a taqueria near Hobby that I love. They don't speak English and I spend the next day or two on the toilet, but the food is worth it.

el Tiempo is the most popular right now. Then there's Hugo's if you want authentic.

A lot of people recommend cyclone Anaya. I personally don't like that one, but it's popular.
