Many people, especially those with the gigantic pickup trucks, act like they are driving in the Grand Theft Auto game. Nobody around here knows how to use a blinker when changing lanes either. I've worked in three offices here that have had plenty of rude people. I don't get the supposed friendliness of the city that I hear people talk about. Maybe if they are from New Jersey and 95% of the people are a-holes, so 70% of the population consisting of a-holes impresses them.

As far as the supposed cheapness of the city, if you are from New York or Los Angeles, it is cheap. Not so if you are from Macon, Georgia or Cedar Rapids, Iowa. $500/month will get you a decent 1-br apartment in those places. Anything under $700/month in Houston will literally be in the middle of the ghetto where you will hear gunshots at night and have your car broken into regularly.
Yeah, those Californians/New Yorkers and their gigantic pickup trucks...!!!!

Ok I'll join the conversation.. it's been on my mind ever since I moved here from So Cal. 1 1/2 year ago
It's been a hard adjustment moving here, everything is different here, especially the lifestyle. However there are some major things I like about Texas. People are nice and courteous (not so driving), I was able to buy my dream house and I do feel safe in my neighborhood. The hard part is missing the option to do outdoor activities (due to weather), the beach, beautiful parks and hiking trails, walk on sidewalks, street lights, endless eclectic venues and you can drive to Vegas in 4 hours!

The thing that helped me adjust is the realization that you can't compare the too. There are just two very different cities. I feel welcomed here and Houston is the right place for me and my family right now and I am very thankful for what I have.

What part of town do you live in?

Maybe it's because I've grown up here but the weather doesn't limit my outdoor activity. I run pretty actively throughout the year as well as many other outdoor activities

You can wakesurf nine months out of the year without a wetsuit in Houston.

I like Houston for what it's worth and been here for 20 years, mainly because of my job. Would I leave - yes. It would need to be somewhere close to the coast (like 10 min drive) where the water and beaches are nice. We actually have another residence overseas like that, but there are no jobs in my field right at that location .

In my head, I see myself surfing on Saturday mornings, playing volleyball in the afternoon and hanging out around a fire listening to the surf at night. Who wouldn't want to ride a skateboard along the beach to go have lunch and a couple of beers on a patio watching the people walking past with the ocean in the background?

Sure, the water is kind of cold and there are a lot of restrictions, but it's still a great place. Family and money keep me from living there.
I think that just about says it all. Is there any denying that from a geographic and climate point of view CA can be pretty fantastic? The problem is, its beauty comes at a steep cost. I know a lot of people who love the climate and the beach but hardly ever get a chance to enjoy it except as they walk to or from there car on their way to work. And when they do enjoy life here while sitting at the beach and looking at the sun as it sets over the horizon not far from their mind is how they are going to keep on paying for it. Ive never lived in a place where $$ was so prominently on peoples minds, not so much out of greed but out of necessity.

The cost of housing is darn high out here. Just take a look at Zillow or any other real estate site and see what you can find for under $400k. Not much unless you want to live in the desert, at which point you may as well move to another state. Everything else is expensive too, even avocados which grow everywhere.

Move inside the loop. You will have all of that other than the beach.

What about the gambling? Are you thinking Lake Charles? That is 2.5 hours away so quicker trip than Vegas and they even have a Golden Nugget so he will feel right at home...

Outdoor activities in SoCal style parks and hiking trails, beautiful weather, endless eclectic venues and gambling can be found inside the loop? What part? Can I have whatever it is you're smoking? Half of "inside the loop" is a garbage dump where sidewalks abruptly end. I suppose 5th ward, Denver Harbor, 3rd ward and downtowns 70% population of "halfway" folks is more eclectic than any of us. My bad.

Cypress. The humidity I can deal with (sort of). It's when it rains, unpredictable and it ruins your plans. I guess I'm used to no rain so I never had to account for it.
I've visited a few parks in the North West part of Houston. Honestly I was not impressed. To be fair I havn't really ventured out much mainly been staying in the North West area.
