My wife and I are stuck in Midtown at the moment. I say stuck, because we can't sell our house. We are trying to get to the burbs because we have a 3 and 4yr old and want good education. My son will be 5 coming up and I need to enroll him in a good kindergarten. I have always heard Midtown is not good for schools. I hate to pay private, but will if I have to if its reasonable. I already pay out the ying yang for daycare. Near $1300. Can anyone suggests any good kindergartens in the area. Heights? Montrose? Public schools? Please help me out. Heck, I don't even know the zone I am in and the HISD site is an unreadable PDF map.

St. Michael's ( Galleria area) and St. Martins' (Galleria area) give a big bang for the buck. Join the church and its an even better deal.

Don't let the myth that education is better in the burbs fool you. Texas public education is standard in every school. Some schools may have better parental involvement and no gangstas but the education is exactly the same. There're plenty of school within Houston that are just as good and in some cases better when it comes to special needs or Gifted and Talented programs. If you can afford moving somewehre in Spring Branch ISD, or HISD within the Galleria (Briargrove, Grady, Lamar),it just might be even better.

I've heard the Heights has a good school too...can't remember the name. Travis?

Thanks. I like the Heights. My wife and I both work downtown, so for now, I think the Galleria is too far to go and then come back. Anyone else? Thank you for your response.

The Greek Orthodox Chrurch on Yoakum (Montrose between Westheimer and Alabama) has a good school, St. Anne's at Westheimer and Shepherd.

Smile You don't need to go to the burbs for a quality education

HISD is a great district. It serves many different populations as most urban districts do. There aren't many surburban districts that can compete. You should pay attention to individual schools that a house is zoned to before purchasing it. In the meantime, the NAEYC website has some good references. Or, google private schools in houston and actually visit schools that interest you. You can tell if a school is good or not the moment you walk in the door. Good Luck!

Way to go Dolphins! Yes, we think AOS is great. Discount for church members. Safe, loving environment, caring teachers and students, and very accepting of all religious backgrounds (we're neither Greek nor Orthodox!)

St Pauls, First Presbyterian,St Stepehens is an excellent Montossori School, Now is the time to apply to HISD magnets. Get your child tested, the application and you could get into River Oaks or Roberts. But you have to get going on that asap.
