I support both measures. As for the campus carry bill specifically, while I'm wary of public college presidents subverting the intent and language of the law under the guise of creating "gun free zones," I'm happy that a balance was reached between public and private schools; no need to trample private property rights while defending the general right to bear arms.

You're the one that said the exposed weapon out them at an advantage.

Don't move the goalposts.

I've lived in Texas for 17 years of my life...not sure that qualifies me as a long-time Texan. I'm 100% opposed.

A class passed is a class passed forever. You don't "lose" previously passed classes when you fail one.

Cops in general and street cops in particular rarely deal with a surprise combat situation. They are either being called to a situation in progress or they are initiating the situation themselves. And when a uniformed police officer is successfully ambushed, it is because the criminal planned his attack around the fact that he knows the officer is armed.

OTOH, an armed citizen is armed specifically for a surprise combat situation--that in which his potential opponent will nearly always a strong element of surprise and selection of the environment. The criminal does not know for certain who is armed and can only plan for those he knows are armed (like the uniformed police officers who are successfully ambushed).

The armed citizen can counter that to some extent by being an element of surprise himself, an unknown quantity. I don't know of any of the tactical combat authorities who believe open carry is tactically superior to concealed carry in a civilian combat situation.

It would be interesting to see the data on "civilian combat situations." I am not certain but I would guess that there is not a lot of it out there because civilians don't often find themselves in combat situations, let alone situations were a gun is the most effective instrument of self-defense. My suspicion is that these situations are frequently fantasized and rarely encountered.

There are plenty of "civilian combat situations." However, in order for the average range-trained civilian to use a firearm successfully, he has to have a lot of lucky factors fall in his favor (first luck factor: The bad guy happens to be shooting at someone else first). If he's dealing with criminals with any significant level of tactical thought, he's in trouble.

Because crooks know beforehand they're armed.
