Hi All,

I am planning to plant a orange/tangerine tree in my backyard. I have visited the Houston Garden Center this weekend to search for ideal tree. However, there are many different orange/tangerine trees in their collections.

Could anyone (based on your own experience) give us an idea of what is the best orange/tangerine trees that bear plenty of sweet/tasty fruits and well adapted to Houston weather. Also, which one has the best tree shape:

1. Dancy Tangerine

2. Miho Satsuma

3. Hamlin Sweet Orange

4. Washington Navel Orange

5. Clementine Mandarin

Thank you,

Houstoncat

I don't know where in the Houston area you are located. But Satsumas provide an added measure of freeze protection.

I am in the Sugar Land area. Is the fruits of Satuma tasty or sour?

Best place for fruit trees is the Urban Harvest Fruit Tree sale. They only sell the varieties that will do well in our area and the people selling them are usually the growers, so they know a lot about the trees. It is normally only held in January, but it looks like they are having one next month, March 14th.

Urban Harvest - FRUIT TREE SALE

I have an orange tree my grandfather bought years ago, and it has sweet, grapefruit sized navel oranges. Wish I knew the variety.

Definitely don't get the trees from Houston Garden Center. Try Buchanan's in the Heights or Wabash Feed Store on Washington for good trees.

We have a Moro Blood orange tree. 2011 and 2012 we had a small crop, 2013 it was so loaded we thought the branches were going to break, last year not one orange. I have my doubts for this year too as it has Sooty Mold that we are trying to deal with. The oranges are very tasty.
