The flight school where I got my Private appears to have gone out of business. Too bad. I would have recommended them. They had good aircraft and fair rates. My instructors were very good as well.

It raises another point, though. Many schools will offer a discounted rate for paying all or part of your hours up front. If they go out of business, though, you're probably out of luck. I bought flight time in 10-hour blocks and paid as I went.

Flight schools are often small, family-type businesses, so they may not be very stable. You can count on about $8000-$10,000 to get your first rating (private pilot). Additional ratings are at your discretion, but are usually necessary to do any kind of flying other than just tooling around. Ratings are based on hours in the classroom and in the air, plus a practical and written exam. Some will cost about $5000, others will be twice that or more.

Pick an airport that's convenient to start. You will find flight schools at many small airfields around Houston. Walk in and talk to them. Ask to look at their airplanes. Get a sense of how they operate. Talk to students. You'll figure out pretty quickly which ones you trust.

General Aviation at the Montgomery County Airport. For over thirty years it has been one of the best flight schools in the area.

Tell me the area of Houston you are in and how far you are willing to travel. I will then point you to that areas flight training center. Simple enough.
