I'm moving to Houston in Janurary and am trying to get an idea of what commute times would be. I'm thinking of living in the Midtown/Heights area inside the 610 loop.

My office is located out on beltway 8 by the Sam Houston Raceway Park (horse track) zip code 77064. Can anyone tell me what commute times would be taking 290 out to Beltway 8? I'm thinking it wouldn't be so bad because of the reverse commute but really I have no idea...

Also, are there certain streets or intersections of Midtown that are the best for nightlife/restaurants? Midtown seems to apply to a pretty large area...

Appreciate the help

First, you would not want to take 290 out it would take far too long to get there I'm talking about getting to 290 in the first place). If you live in mid-town, the quickest way is out 45 N to 249 or 45 N to Beltway 8. Not really a bad reverse commute about 30 minutes if there are no accidents.

Reverse commute, that is a piece of cake. From Midtown, you have the option of going either I-45 or 290. I would probably opt for 45.

I don't live anywhere near these areas, but I've ''reverse commuted'' on 290 from 6/1960 to 610 during afternoon rush hour many times, and not one time was it an easy cruise. I-10 aside, 290 is the worst freeway in town.

This man speaks the truth.

The "reverse" theory works pretty well on most Houston freeways, but not 10 or 290. And yes, currently 290 is the worst of them. (I-10's slowness can at least be blamed on construction)

From the Heights, you could just take Shepherd north to Montgomery Road which becomes Highway 249, and it becomes a freeway before you get to the beltway. Sure, there are some lights you'll hit before then, but the lights you'll hit on 290 are the ones mounted on the car in front of you and those don't eventually turn green.
