Hi all,

I am a recent college grad that will be moving to the Port Lavaca area to work as an engineer in one of the coastal plants. Has anyone had any experience with making the 90+ mile commute from Houston to Port Lavaca? I was considering living in the Sugar Land area to be minimize the commute as much as possible. As a young 20-something, I would really like to be somewhere near the city rather than living in a small coastal town, however I hear that exceptionally long commutes can really wear you down. I appreciate all the help and advice!

Good lord that would be awful. I think that's just narrow highways with lots of stoplights. Stay in victoria a few years, save up some money, then get a job closer to Houston if you still want to be near a city.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, the most logical and financially responsible scenario would be commuting from Victoria. I'm a transplant from the Northeast, so I am just worried about being able to meet other people my age in the area. It does seem large enough to have some sort of diversity demographically.

yeah, Victoria is probably the best place. it's not the worst drive to Port Lavaca. definitely don't recommend taking on a long commute, though. not to mention all the deer and hogs you'd end up hitting on the roads.

i've been in Victoria for about six months now, having moved from out of state. i thought the exact same thing as you did about Victoria being a big-ish city that should have plenty to do. that turned out not to be the case. few chicks. few young people in general. ignore the demographics of the city; Victoria is just a small Texas town that just happens to have a Wal-Mart and a Target. everyone also leaves town on the weekends to head to San Antonio or Corpus or Houston, which i'd also advise you doing to keep your sanity here.

Port Lavaca is kind of a dead little coastal town, so Victoria is still probably your best bet.

all the best, though. i'm here for the experience, too!

Port Lavaca is more like 130 miles from Houston.
