I think it applies more to the "kids" (some of whom are 20-something now) who are being/have been raised in cages with Chili's and Macaroni Grill....and while many Houston-area suburbanites who are local to the area did live in the Inner Loop before, it's not necessarily the same for people from west/north/east/wherever piling into Katy, The Woodlands etc.

Of course these are all basically generalizations and you can either get offended or see them for what they are and not take anything too personally.

Not everybody is coming necessarily from a city, be it "popular" or not, for that matter either.

As far as I know, most people in the suburbs do pretty much only go to chain restraunts. Life outside of Chili's is too bright and scary. I've lived in suburbs for several years and if anyone goes anywhere it's to some typical chain restraunt. What the hell else is there in the suburbs? Pretty much the only things that aren't chains in the suburbs are run-of-the-mill westernized-Chinese restraunts owned by families and a few overpriced Mexican food restraunts that has food that really doesn't taste very Mexican at all.

The best dining is definitely centrally located. Montrose has some good stuff but I think the Galleria area has much better choices.

Houston has a huge choice of restraunts of all types of different cuisines that the suburbs just doesn't have. Just go to b4-u-eat and look at the range of choices.

Keep in mind some suburbanites have been there, done that...and are over it now. Not all of us were raised in cages with Chili's and Macaroni Grill, ya know! Sorry, this thread just hit me the wrong way, I guess.
I guess I wasn't too clear in my original post, sorry -- it wasn't so much the actual restaurant that the guests turned their noses up at - it was more the "area" that the restaurant was in. More like appalled at being in the Montrose area.

One of the things I really dislike about suburbia are the chains, whether it be restaurants, stores, etc. Ironic as it sounds, I had better choices of restaurants when I lived out in the boonies by the TRF fairgrounds - all were Mom & Pop places, something I haven't really found since moving back to NW suburban Houston (I'm actually on the Houston/Cypress line).

I do have a bazillion chain restaurants nearby though! They're just not my thing, but then again, suburbia is definitely NOT my thing - either give me a rural area (preferred) or if I have to be in the city, stick me in the CITY with the museums, restaurants, theater, etc., not this suburban nonsense (that topic is for another thread!). :-)

I'm going to bookmark this thread and make a list of all the restaurants listed to try after the holidays are over. :-) Thank you for the listings!
