We are contemplating a move from Dallas to Houston this summer for work relocation. We love Dallas and we are hoping to also love Houston. I would love honest recommendations on where to live based on our needs and preferences below.

About us:
- We are in our early 30s
- Have two kids: 4 year old and 3 month old
- Will work at 290 and Beltway
- We love the outdoors, biking, running, swimming
- Looking to stay in the $400k-$500K home price range

Priorities:
- Education. My son currently attends a top rated Montessori school in Dallas. We are so happy there. We would like to find either a strong Montessori program or private preschool. We also want to buy in a strong school district to have the option to use the public school system when he enters 1st grade.
- We prefer newer housing with lots of amenities, but would look at an older remodeled home with lots of mature trees and parks.
- Want to live in an area with lots of families, parks, things to do with kids.
- Don't want a crazy commute.

My husband will most likely have to leave his current job in the mortgage underwriting industry if we move to Houston. He has a corporate finance degree and great job history. What is the job market like?

Thank you for your honest feedback!!!

Do you have a job already in Houston? People think jobs grow on trees here. Might want to have that lined up. More than likely his job will be downtown or in the Galleria area. Your price range probably means suburbs. Maybe something out 290. The Energy Corridor area might work for you. Katy and The Woodlands will be a long drive. Houston is not laid out like Dallas. If you could up your budget a little you could do Oak Forest which is at 290 and 610. It is basically exactly what you are looking for. It is also a very hot area. Oak Forest Elementary school is one of the best in the city. Other people might have some better suggestions.

at that price point your pretty much priced out of memorial and good spring branch. Lately one of my favorite areas around town has been around Terry Hershey Park (miles of trails and outdoorsy goodness) If you want suburbs, I dont know much about them but your work would be a semi easy commute from Cypress, Tomball, you could probably get quite the spread 4+Acres in Hockley for 500k (eventually the grand parkway will be completed out that way also so if you plan on spending some time in Houston it may be a good spec. If you want to be close to the action and outdoors in your price range look around terry hershey park. Actually...was just looking at HAR.com and this area may be out of your price range also...[mod edit - not individual properties]

BURBS IT IS!

I was thinking about Lakes on Eldridge or maybe Jersey Village. LOE has a lot of ex-pats living there and they usually send their kids to private schools but the houses are in your price range and the subdivision is real close to Bear Creek park and Addicks Reservoir area which are great for hike and bike trails. The public schools from what I hear can be iffy. BTW Addicks res. is not a lake but a flood control dam, so it is dry most of the time. Jersey Village is a municipality located right at Beltway 8 and US 290. Great older established town.

Both of these and several adjoining areas are real close to the Blt 8 @ 290 area.

ZIP 77077 zoned to Bush Elementary fits your price range, plus access to Terry Hershey Park and the Barker Reservoir. Trail extensions underway to Addicks Reservoir area. You'd be fine in public for sure through 5th grade at Bush; not sure of opinions about Westbriar MS and Westside HS. So-so commute to 290 / Beltway from there.

Check also areas along Cypress Creek north of 290; some sections of the creek have adjacent trail systems. Good commute from there to 290 / Beltway, and your $ go further house-wise than the better parts of the west side of Houston.

Have you looked into Bridgeland? Lots of trails, pools, playgrounds, lakes, etc... A great neighborhood for young families. Tax rate is on the high side though. Commute to work could avoid 290 if you go Fry Rd. to 529 or W. Little York. Maybe 30-45 minutes.

Towne Lake is pretty nice too.
