I will be moving from Austin to Houston and need advice on where to relocate. I am not familiar with the Houston area at all and would appreciate any input based on what I am looking for.

I will be working downtown.
Looking to stay around 1100-1200/month for rent. Max 1300/month.
Late 20's, two dogs, etc.
SAFETY is a major concern.
Have always had at least a 45-min commute in Austin, although would like to shorten that, if at all possible.
Would prefer renting house, as that is what I have have always done in Austin, but understand might have to do the condo/loft/apt route which I would definitely be willing to consider.

Can anyone recommend any areas/thoughts on what would be the best option(s). Thanks in advance!

Generally speaking:

2 dogs = yard = heights

Depends on the dogs. Montrose also is a nice area or Washington St. corridor (especially with access to Memorial park). I doubt you'll find an acceptable "house" for 1100-1200, but there's alot of multi-family houses to rent out part of or pet friendly condos in the areas I mentioned. Alternatively, if you can stand a small commute (25-35 min), the Spring Branch area (west of 290, south of Hammerly) offers some gem neighborhoods with nice houses for alot less money (schools aren't very good). That could alternatively provide some yard for dogs and more space than in town.

Hi and welcome! I moved here 2 years ago from Austin for a job. Everyone thought I was nuts to move but I really enjoy living in Houston.

Check out the Heights also check out Memorial Heights (Studemont and Washington area). When I first moved here, I lived in Memorial Heights in a big complex (Windsor at Sienna), then a garage apt in Woodland Heights (near Bayland and Houston St) and loved both, never had any safety issues and I was single. Montrose is also a neat area but I can't give any personal experience, just that it's close and has lots going on.

I found my apartments via Craigslist but the garage apartments especially move fast- just so you know. Good luck!
