I am moving to Houston and am wondering what areas do not have a huge problem with bugs. I know that anywhere you go there are going to be some bugs but I want to avoid any areas known for having lots of infestations (particularly scorpions, cockroaches, fire ants, etc). I know to avoid new build areas and that's about it so any info will be helpful. Oh and I am looking to buy a house in the 300-400k range... areas I am interested in are Katy, Bellaire and Sugar Land. Thank you.

They are all about the same. Places with water close will have more bugs. That is about it. This is a question I have never heard.

As far as bugs, it's all the same. If you are worried about it, get on a regular extermination schedule and you'll be fine.

Where there is a boom in construction, there will be plenty of rats.

I know it is a strange question but I am asking because I live in Phoenix now and am surrounded by areas that have scorpions yet the area I live in has none.

I have heard about there being scorpions in the very north of Houston, but not in the Sugar Land or Katy area.

Scorpions are rare here. You find them in the hill country, but the sting is closer to a wasp sting. I have never heard of one in Houston. We do have big **** roaches that flutter around. In the six years I have been in my current house I have never seen a live roach. I have found three dead ones. I bought some spray at home depot. Sprayed all around the house and stuff. I had a professional spray once when they were getting rid of termites.

What you plant in your yard will make a big difference. Roaches love some types of gardening stuff. I forget what the stuff is called. Looks like a shrub/grass that is a few inches tall. Rats can also be an issue depending. The house behind me when I lived in West U had lots of rats. They never kept up their back yard. It was like a jungle back there. That place was infested. I don't have that problem with my current house. Water sources near by will also attract roaches and rats. You don't want any standing water on your property. You want good drainage.

To be honest the biggest problem in Houston is mosquitos! Especially, if you are not in an area that does not spray for them. City of Houston sprays. If you are near a bayou or something. They can be really bad. My next house I am installed a misting system.

I found a scorpion in my bathroom sink when I lived in pearland. Only saw one time only and was surprised to have found one.
