Also try Clear The Air in Friendswood. They are honest people and quite knowledgeable.

You can buy R22 condensers. Goodman sells them. R22 costs $10/lb You can find cans all over ebay. Those are crazy prices! Also, I heard they are coming out with some R22 substitute. It will plummet the prices of R22. R22-A or something like that. 2.5 tons is small unless that house is fairly new and well insulated.

That is all very expensive. I guess that's why Houston is the HVAC captiol of the world.
Not trying to spam, but you could always take a 5 week HVAC program for less than any of those repair costs, and learn how to repair and maintain your AC yourself, saving you a lot in the future...

i was in a similar boat. the compressor locked up and i had a choice to let our home warranty install just a new condenser (and leave the 11yr old coil) or go with the new system using the new freon. i went with new.

as for contractors, i have had good experiences with Aircon and Arctic Air. Arctic Air just installed a 14 SEER 5-ton system (condenser and coil) for 4500 total. Mike (the owner) is a great guy.

Much as I would like to learn a new skill, that is simply not a reasonable option for me. If I was living off the grid and had to have air conditioning, that would be a different story

Currently, I am planning on having the coils cleaned and injected with something that will seal up the leak(s) from the inside. Hard start kits will be installed too. Total cost about $700 for both upatairs and downstairs systems. So far upstairs unit is working well after being recharged with freon. Power bill is $10 lower this week than it was last week, and the AC has actually been on for longer.
