Gymrat, I like choice #3. Renovating the dome would cost more money than just tearing it down. Instead, use the money to develop the Astroworld plot. The development would not interfere with Reliant Stadium during games or the rodeo.

At least there is now a deadline. Either they figure something out soon or it goes.

The Astroworld lot is half owned by the rodeo. I think they are going to make it into a parking lot. I think the Houston rodeo has just gotten to be too big. For the first time in ages I did not go to cookoff this year. It is just not worth the trouble anymore.

Exactly,
I went to a motocross event a few weeks ago
I left Reliant, got in the car with a friend at 10pm, we were starving and had to sit there for 1 hour before we could actually leave.

Imagine being an out-of-towner in that situation. I'm familiar enough with Houston that it's not terribly bad but for those that are not........ HORRIBLE!

Tear down the Dome. Put in something entertainment wise be it a movie theatre or an IMAX. Add a nice hotel (or several) and a nice mix of dining options. It would become a "destination" and not just a stop along the way. Locals, imagine going to a football game or other event early enough to park, get something to eat, stroll thru the park area, etc. It could be a nice "tailgate" area for games. For the rodeo it would give more space and even locals might stay at the onsite hotel for the weekend.

Houston is missing out on a great opportunity to make Reliant Park something much better.

How would you handle logistics of people who want to get in there for a movie when there is a football game or some other event going on? It would be a nightmare. Not to mention you would have to take away prime parking spots for it. It just does not make sense to me. A hotel makes no sense there also. A hotel south of 610 over the walkway makes sense. The only thing that could replace the lot the Dome is on is a new astro arena which that have wanted to replace for a while. All of this takes money though.

Go vertical. Build a pay parking garage that is validated for movie goers. It would dissuade football fans from parking there. The movie theater could be on top of the parking garage or the parking garage on top of the theater.

But no one would ever want to fight the traffic to get there during any event. Saturdays and Sundays are prime movie days. If there was a demand for a theater in that area there are plenty of better and cheaper spots. It just makes no sense to me.

Gymrat, Houstonians are too backwards to develop a cohesive entertainment.

I swear, sometimes I think Homer Simpson runs things

You do know there are already plans to have a hotel at Reliant that is adjacent to the Reliant Center. This is where the events I've had to attend the last few years have been. It is SOOOOO needed. If Dallas can finally get a hotel adjacent to their Convention Center........... please tell me Houston can get their act together and see this as a huge need as well. More than 1 hotel is needed. You need multiple hotels that are adjacent to the property or on property for large events. The event I attend there has every hotel in the Medical District and Galleria area sold out months in advance. The nasty, icky places that are close to Reliant are also sold out for this event.

Bingo! You would also have a seperate entrance for this. There is room for a seperate entrance and it would not be that bad. It would actually improve the traffic flow. Heck, when there are large events going on at Reliant Center you have a captive audience as we are stuck there with at times hours between when our kids need to report back.

Yes, but there are no football games going on all year long. How many home football games are there? Not enough to make that much of a difference. I'm not saying it has to be a movie theatre. But something...... An entertainment complex with a few movie screens, bowling alley, laser tag, ice or roller rink. Maybe not ON site at Reliant Park but even across 610 at the old Astroworld plot. Yes, part of it is already being used for overflow parking. There is still plenty of room for something.

Well, it took Dallas how long to finally get a convention center hotel. We finally have one and it is booked solid a year in advance of all of the big events at the DCC.
