Houston has a better economy that most anywhere, however that does not mean its a good idea to show up without a job. I would not feel good about coming to Houston with no job (or just about 99% of anywhere for that matter).

If you are looking for a place to show up with no job and be assured better paying work, I would look at Midland, Texas or Williston, North Dakota. They are so hard up for people that they are paying $15 an hour just to work at Wal-Mart and $20 an hour to work at Starbucks.

Better get a job first, then. Especially for the latter.

How about a stripping rapper who runs marathons while simultaneously stocking barber shelves?

There is some bad info on this thread although I'm not sure it will help the OP. Houston has the largest port in the US in terms of gross tonnage. One can work at the port with a high school education and actually make decent money. But it is VERY hard work. But there are a lot of jobs. Don't listen to these people who say there are no jobs here for people without a degree. It's factually inaccurate. Another good place to look for a decent job with NO education is IAH. Again, these are not jobs where you hang around and do nothing, but you can make 40k a year with a HS diploma and with the low COL in Houston, that ain't bad.

Still only pays minimum wage - and he'll still need a car, after the marathon.
