I have lived in Houston for about 3 years after getting out of the Marine Corps. I have been working at a technology company off of 249 and for the last year I have been living in Cypress towards 249. I am finally in a financial position to purchase a home and just started working in Katy, TX (77449). I have to admit that I am confused looking around the web and doing a limited driving around neighborhoods.

I think that I am lucky that I am currently working in Katy, raising two little girls and can be close to work. However, I work in the software industry and worry about close proximity to major job hubs for when and if I eventually move on from where I currently am.

From looking around I am thinking about different parts of Katy, South of 290 Cypress, and maybe spring branch, west memorial, Cinco Ranch. My price range will probably have an upper end of around 150K-160K but would like to get a good value on a home.

Your money will go further in Cypress, south of 290.

Barkers Ridge and Williamsburg settlement would be a good start.

Learning more about the neighborhoods as we look. South of I-10 in katy it looks like cimmaron, oak park trails and the surrounding areas may be in our price range and nice but houses go fast in the area.

The part of Katy north of I-10 is generally not very nice though I believe there are some new development being built in the extreme northern portion of what is referred to as Katy.

Depends on how diverse of a neighborhood you want to live in. I suspect most people who move to Katy don't want to live in a mini-United Nations, which is what it is like north of I-10.

Funny, I live north of I-10 and my neighborhood is about 80-85% white. There are various other races as well, but nothing I feel uncomfortable around. I heard all the "north of I-10 horror stories" when moving out here, and while there are some sketchy areas north of I-10, there are a lot of places that are nice. I have lived in our house for about a year and a half and have not heard any incidents of crime either (for the immediate surrounding area). I agree, people drink too much of the Cinco kool-aid.

Thanks for clearing up my misconception. I was only going off of anecdotal observations on my part, but you live there so the OP should go with what you have to say instead.

If the houses go fast that should tell you something. This generally means good things. Generally.
