CheryJohns, I see what you're saying. You can usually tell when it's that type of "sex offender".
I have heard that some of the crime is coming from displaced Katrina victims, but one question I have is does how close your house is to retail/business affect your chances of being a burglarized? Like, say I have a house in a neighborhood that backs up to a car dealer/store/etc, does that make it more likely someone will rob me?

Not only does it increase your chances - it decreases your value. Always get "into" a subdivision, not on the edge.

Does that really affect your chances of being robbed?

Put yourself in the burglar's place - are you going to go deep into a neighborhood, with neighbors all about - or are you going to hit the edge and run?

That makes sense. What types of security do you suggest? Cameras, doors, dogs, pepper spray? What kinds of things help deter any would-be burglars?

Alarm with outside sign. A barker (dog). Really, we are not as crime-ridden as you think. Again, it's like thinking you are going to hit by a meteor if you move to Russia.

Typically it's always a group of low-life thugs responsible for a rash of burglaries. Right now there's one subdivision where several houses have been hit. Not sure if they've caught the crooks, but it's in the heart of The Woodlands (Windward Cove) on Lake Woodlands. The thugs learn the habits of the residents and wait for them to leave. I was born in The Woodlands 3 decades ago and I don't know if I ever have heard of a home invasion here... at least not in The Woodlands proper. Maybe in The Hoodlands (outskirts... look up: if you see powerlines or billboards, you're in The Hoodlands) but never in one of the villages. Crime is few and far between here. The only violent crimes that ever happen seem to be either in The Hoodlands or at the mall. Residents don't go to the mall, though-- it's a honeypot for non-Woodlandites... keeps the riff raff at bay.

Plus, everyone in The Woodlands (Obviously I don't mean everyone literally but a vast majority) have multiple firearms. Police response last time my alarm went off was 6 minutes (wind blew open the door). I was out of bed and clearing the house with a Springfield XDm in 6 seconds. Thugs know we're armed. It's a very conservative township in the south, for crying out loud.

Don't let jealous naysayers who wish they lived in The Woodlands scare you out of moving here. It's great.

Well, think like a home robber... Juicy targets are rich areas... so go there. Now our home in Chicago has burglar bars on our windows so they can't break in, plus our windows are covered. The home next to use was robbed while we were on vacation, - they could of cleared us out if they robbed us.
