Doing a road trip this summer to Texas. Going from Dallas to Houston down to Rio Grande City and up north to San Antonio from there. I'm a fan of Hispanic cuisine, so that may be my main food source during the trip. But what are the recomended places for Mexican food in Houston?

Do you want "Hispanic cuisine" or "Mexican cuisine"
There's a big difference between those two.

My input (being from South Texas, not SE Texas), is that Houston & Dallas "mexican/hispanic" food is no where near the level of SA, South Tx, Rio Grande, etc. food. So best to stick to your current route and dine on the lesser first.

I have lived in Houston for over 3 years now (and previously 2 years in Dallas) and have never really had good mexican/hispanic food. Breakfast tacos? Nope. Thick homemade tortillas? Nope. Great authentic enchiladas? Nope. The list goes on.

Thirdcoastnole gets it right. The Mexican food I've had in the valley is the best I've ever had. Moving to Houston from Buffalo, I never thought I'd want for Mexican food here but it still doesn't match the valley. In Rio Grande City try Tacos Nay or Tacos Aka. Between Rio and Roma there is another great place called cactus cafe. If you got through McAllen, El Palenque is a great upscale Mexican place right off the 83. Finally, if you stay in Rio check out La Borde House. It is an amazing hotel.

In my experience I have found that for most Americans, the term "Hispanic" is thought to be automatically equivalent with Mexico (never mind the fact that there are other fifteen other Latin American Spanish speaking countries).

Let's put it this way,
in the 16 years that I lived in Venezuela I saw 1 Mexican restaurant
and I didn't see a tortilla until I came to the US.

This. Then add southeast, Pasadena and South Houston.

Someone will probably chime in here and elaborate on the Northside as well.
