Thanks all. Kid friendly preferred but definitely not a must as the other criteria I mentioned in my original post are more important. We are used to walking so even walking from downtown to the Randalls in midtown for groceries seems doable to us according to mapquest (20 mins). Bases on my preliminary research, I have found apts of 750 sq ft (which is more than enough for us) for less than 2000 per month but the challenge is finding which ones are close to the light rail and finding out th names of these buildings to begin with.

Look at Camden Midtown - it is a across the street from a Randalls Grocery Store although I wouldn't want to walk home at night from downtown - a bit sketchy between Midtown and downtown at night.

You'll be walking under the highway through homeless camps. I think in your mind Houston is a much more livable and walkable city than it really is.

Lots of people walk home to camden apts. every day. I work downtown and ton of co-workers live in midtown and either walk or ride bikes to work - but I think most of them are home before it is night. But without a car you will be very limited other than the Randall's grocery store and a CVS pharmacy.

But couldn't my husband just take the light rail from downtown to midtown at night to get home and that would solve the problem of having to walk along sketchy parts if town at night? I would only go out for groceries, etc during the day given i have the toddler with me.

Yes, the light rail and bus lines would eliminate the need for walking home from downtown at night.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned a second supermarket in Midtown - Fiesta is located 1 block from the Wheeler Ave. light rail station. That chain caters to a more international population (especially from south of the border) but I don't know that it's regarded as a "bad" store.
