had same question - so far what I have found out is you can't do much. deep/steam clean the tile and fill in any gaps with grout I thought there should be something which can make the surface smoother-newer but have found none so far

I know a lot of people don't like to use it but Ammonia works like a miracle to clean porcelain and tile! I have never found anything better.

Cleaner
Household ammonia is a solution of NH3 in water used as a general purpose cleaner for many surfaces. Because ammonia results in a relatively streak-free shine, one of its most common uses is to clean glass, porcelain and stainless steel. It is also frequently used for cleaning ovens and soaking items to loosen baked-on grime. Household ammonia ranges in concentration from 5 to 10 weight percent ammonia.

We got a gallon of commercial tile cleaner from Master Tile and brushed it in... had some great results. For the darkest grout we used 'magic eraser' sticks from home depot to lighten them.

try oxygen bleach on the grout lines, make it into a runny paste and let it sit for 15 mins and scrub with a tile brush
