I'm interested in exploring the area outside of Houston (within 3 hours) and was looking for recommendations on best places to go camping. I'd like a place with good hiking trails and modern bathrooms.

Take a look at Wolf Creek Park in Coldspring right on my beloved Lake Livingston. As an RVer I also post in RV forums as well as subscribe to RV subscriptions. I read this park was voted the 2nd most beautiful RV - Camping park in the USA. This place is first class all the way. This is not state or county owned. It's owned by the Trinity River Authority and they maintain this as well as possible. We spent much time there parked right on the water's edge.

So much open land, well landscaped as well as untouched nature. No campsites are on top of one another, all are well spread out. It's still only $17 per night for tent campers. For civilization there is anything you need in the tiny town of Coldspring. Don't forget to visit the old jail.

Alabama Coushatta Indian Reservation near Livingston...less than 2 hours from town, very quiet, next to the Big Thicket preserve for adventurous hikers..

Sam Houston National Forest near Huntsville.

I can vouch for Wolf Creek Park. Really nice park, great facilities as well. Same with Huntsville.

You might want to check out McKinney State park. It's right outside of Austin and it's very nice. Great for hiking/biking, swimming, or just relaxing. I'm actually going there tomorrow!

It's not down 59S, but 288S instead, Brazos Bend SP is a great place to go camping. Only bad part about it is it has alligators which is bad if you like to bring your dog(s) camping (which I always do)

Can't you get to Brazos Bend SP from 59 going down Crabb River (Grand Parkway/99)? It's been a long time but seems to me I got to it that way. There's an observatory right in the park too.

Brazos Bend State Park. Was just there yesterday. Perfect for fishing, camping, bird watching, alligators, they have classes for kids (went to one yesterday w/ live non-venomous snakes), and all sorts of activities. From downtown, it's probably less than 45 minutes away, but it seems like you're in a whole other world from Houston.

And yes, you can take 59. Exit Crabb River.
