Hello all...my family and I will be moving from San Diego to Houston in about 8 months. The wifey and I will be taking a trip out that way in the next couple months to have a look for ourselves. We've been reading this forum for about 4 weeks now and I have a question myself. We have a house plan that we want to have built...approximately 3800sf. Alot of communites out there only offer what is preselected by the builder. The particular design we want has everything we would like to have in a home. My question is, are there any areas that give the buyer an option to use thier own plans to build? We wouldn't mind commuting 45mins to Houston for work by the way. Our type of neighborhood is one that has great schools, diversity, safe, family oriented, a neighborhood where people take pride in thier homes (lawns are cut/trimmed - and people are friendly. A place where i'm not on top of my neighbors...i've always wanted one of those green and yellow riding mowers . So enough property for there to be a need of a riding mower. Of course, we know we could get this further out from Houston than we would want to be, but that would be too far. My wifes cousin goes to college in Houston and she reccomended Sugarland...a buddy of mine on the ship with me reccomended The Woodlands. I don't want this to sound like the other hundreds of questions posted, the difference I think in my question is we already have a home plan we want to use to build. Also, we want our home to be a concrete style home with interior walls wood framing...any suggestions on builders in the area or any experience with a builder that has built your concrete home? Thanks in advance.

Default Cutloose

Why do you feel "...you are not going to get the best you deserve..."? My family and I don't really care for San Diego...housing is very exspensive and we just don't care for it out this way. We have lived in Louisiana and Virginia to give you an indication why we don't care for the westcoast. At any rate i'm on orders so that's where we are headed . So what gives...explain your oppinion please...

I am only familiar with NE side of Houston but there you have Walden on Lake Houston and Riverwalk where you can buy acreage and build your own plan.

I can't really answer your question as far as where to buy land, but there is a concrete house being built near my son's school, and I pass it occasionally. Next time I pass, I'll see if there's a sign for the builder, or I'll ask the construction guys who it is.

Hey fellow Coastie dont listen to that nonsense by Cutloose, Houston is a great place for diversity, affordable housing prices, culture, job growth etc. By the way I'm a coastie too, I have been stationed in the Galveston area for 7 years. I currently live in North Houston (Great place). I live not too far from Jersey village and Tomball, those two areas are great especially Tomball. I grew up in Los Angeles and visit there once/twice a year and I can tell you it has gone down overpriced houses, gangs, shuting down trauma units you name it. You will get your money's worth for homes here. There are plenty of safe neigborhoods in Houston. Like I said before check out Tomball and Jersey Village. Houston is great for military retirement. Dont let the property taxes scare you.

Utilities for my home in Kingwood, TX are significantly cheaper than PG&E in N Cal and even Sacramento MUD

Houston is a world class city. SD is not (plus good luck building a 3500sf home in SD for less than 1.5 M
