Nana's right. Most of the crime in Houston is from friends, relatives or crazy people. Lots and lots of crazy people.

If life was that simple we all could avoid crazy people.

Because Houston is so large, you might think about staying in an extended stay hotel and do your job hunt first - putting off finding a more permanent apartment until you have located the job. It is all about the commute here.

Example: if you take a job in the 290/1960 area - you will want to find a place in Cypress or Copperfield. If you take a job at The Medical Center, in Sugar Land or the I-10/Gessner area (all with numerous medical facilities) - you will want to rent closer to them. All of these areas are not very close to each other.

Whenever I think of crime, I remember when Houston was the "Murder Capitol" for a couple of years in the late 80's. The Houston Chronicle put it in the proper perspective - if you stay out of bars on Telephone Road - your chances of being a victim drop significantly.

You mentioned that you're single and you don't like the place that you live now. Why not just get a job and move hear for couple years. It won't kill you. It is not the best as some people make it out to be but it is not at all a bad place. I love it here b/c I hated the depressingly cold weather in Minnesota. Some people just can't take the heat here. Once you've got a job, make a leap of change. With the kind of job that you have, it's easy to move around.
