I think the poster meant that Sharptown has a large Hispanics and African American population that is economically disadvantaged. As opposed to Asians or Others in Sugar Land, Katy, Richmond, etc. that are more affluent. That is just my guess and observation....

Hi all,
I'm a U of H grad student. I'm writing a paper about Sharpstown's demographic change in the past 30 or so years. I was hoping you all might answer a few questions about your knowledge of Sharpstown for my paper.

1. If you live in Sharpstown, when did you move and how long have you lived there?
2. If you used to live in Sharpstown, but have since moved, why did you move?
3. What do you think caused the demographic shift in Sharpstown in the 1980s (i.e. what caused more minorities move to Sharpstown)?
4. Is Sharpstown a suburb? Why or why not?

Thanks for all who reply!

I've only been to Sharpstown Center/Mall once over a year ago. It seemed a little bit on the hood/ghetto side. But I didn't feel unsafe. However i wouldn't live over that way though. I've seen far worse areas in my lifetime. I haven't found a neighborhood in Houston that's scares the begeezes out of me yet. This thread makes me want to check that area out again.

It's all relative. If you've lived in Houston a while and have seen other neighborhoods in the city/metropolitan area, your perspective of what Sharpstown is might be different. That said, compared to other "rough" areas in cities across the country, Sharpstown doesn't look the part. But the crime rate is indeed pretty high.

First of all, let me make it clear that I am talking about the subdivision bordered by the beltway+bellaire+US-59+Beechnut. The houses are a bit older than other parts of town, but are well-built. Let's remember that the area used to be the great white place in the 60/70/80's. They even altered the route of 59 to go through Sharpstown. Hence most of the people here are white older people - although you seill see cuties jogging. Many private schools, churches, parks, a general hospital+several clinics, commercial areas, library, etc. I don't think this area is unsafe, whereas the apartments outside are indeed crappy. I hate them! Most of the reported crime is self inflicted here and not in the sub-division. I think there are more burglaries/break-ins in Sugarland as the people are richer.

The best feature of Sharpstown is its location and potential. You can get to anywhere easily - via driving/bus. The galleria is 3 miles away, only 15-20 minutes to downtown/medical center. It's an investment to buy a house here because the value increases alot. My dad bought a house there in the 80's for $65k, and the same house (with new roof/siding) is appraised at $132k now. The mall everyone is complaining about is being renovated into a Mexican place and will not attract black gangs anymore. Chinatown is more neat and well-built. My prediction is that they are going to re-vitalize the commercial complexes like Meyerland and rebuild houses like in Bellaire, and the golden age will come again.

Sharpstown is mostly full of La Primera I call them lollypops they wear all white and have white flags. If you act aggressive and sufficiently intimidate them they will leave you alone. I work in the ghetto and that has been my experience you just have to sufficiently intimidate criminals and gang members. A lot of robberies happen when the victim did not intimidate the attacker.

So a home owner should stand outside and foam at the mouth, while throwing coconuts at passing cars?

no,no,no.......you just stand up straight, nose to nose,... sneer,...and say "hello, lollypop". If this doesn't scare them away, you lick their face.

If that fails, then, and only then, do you start pelting them with the heavy coconut artillery.

Well, anything is safer than throwing a Lee's Sandwich. That will just make them come closer...then you'd have to shove them off the road.
