We're looking for something to do this weekend...

Does Houston have neighborhood/street parties or anything like they have in Chicago? Any street festivals or fun events happening around town?

One thought was to go to the beach- would Galveston or any beach around the area be crazy busy this weekend?

It's probably too hot to drum up any kind of "neighborhood/street" parties. Come to think of it, there doesn't seem to be much of that at any time of the year, other than maybe around Montrose, etc. People seem to keep to themselves indoors, and keep to their video games and couch potato activites. Backyards though might have some action, but those are mostly private.

If the weather isn't too rainy, Galveston might have a lot of people. I don't know about "busy", but it can sometimes be a bit crowded. Otherwise, it might not be too bad ahead of Labor Day itself.

If you go to Galveston the water is going to be very torn up because of the tropical storm. Watch for rip tides. But you don't really need to go into the water to have fun; grab a muffaletta at Maceo's, go to Patty Cake's and get backed goods, go to the Strand have a beer and wander through schlock shops, hit La King's Confectionery for ice cream.
