But since you are a new customer, I would go ahead and take advantage of it.

I don't think that is what the poster is saying.

I think the poster is saying the promotion is for in coming customers not existing customers.

to benefit from the promotion you would have to drop reliant, move to another company and move back to reliant

That rate is just a teaser rate for the first month. After that, the rate is going to go up. See Reliant Energy Clear Plan Information for the historical rates for that plan. By the second month, you'll probably be back up to 11 cents per Kwh.

What happens if I sign up for 5.4 cents and after 1 month switch to another provider's MTM and then come back to reliant the following month? Will I be eligible for 5.4 cents or whatever on the website again or not?

You would be surprised how many people wouldn't catch on that their bill was increasing every month. When your billing triple price it doesn't take a lot of slow to catch on customers to make a good profit. It is like when the wireless companies sometimes "accidentally" overcharge everyone 50 cents on their bill, sure 30 or 40% of your customers may call and complain and you happily remove the overcharge but you just booked 21 million in profit off the 60% that never noticed.

Nope. Even if you drop reliant, move to another company and move back to reliant, the teaser rate may be valid only for the first month..Since its month-to-month they are under no obligation to give the teaser rate for the second month.

We signed up on this plan and the one catch we found was that they will charge you $5 if you ever call Reliant for anything. We figure if they raise the rate on us, we'll just switch to someone else.

I didn't say it would last all I was explaining was the fact that the rate was not for customers they already have but for new customers. I don't know what reliant may or may not do next month. I am not Miss Cleo.

I think you would be eligible in that case. I was with Reliant for 6 months, then went to Champion for 6 months, then came back to Reliant and got a 7.2 cent fixed promo rate for another 6 months. When I came back I went through the "Not a Customer" link and got the promo rate. I assume you could do that if you went to another provider month to month, then came back. I just don't feel like switching providers every single month, so I look for longer fixed rate contracts.
