I am building a new home in Katy and am trying to decide if there is value in adding a water softener. Does anyone have data on the water "hardness" in Katy, or other relevant thoughts?

Thanks!

Do you have city water or well water? If it is well water you will see quite a difference but if it is city water you probably won't see much. It will improve but it may just be marginal.

At least get the house plumbed for a Water softener. Much easier in the future if you decide to get one installed. the builders will rip you off.

Default Hard water..

Katy has hard water. I'd recommend getting a water softener if you can afford to.

GET the house plumbed for a water softener and don't go through the builder for the system itself, they all a total rip-off. When you get the house plumbed for the water softener make sure you have a water input, a water output and a drainage pipe, all located in the same location. Also ensure you pick a good place in the garage where you know the water softener system will fit. Most of the tanks are very slim and I recommend install it in the garage.
Lastly make sure they don't connect you external / outside water bibs to the soft water.

After all is done you have plenty of choices to pick a good and reasonable price softener system.

Can anyone recommend some companies that can install one for an existing home? I'm looking to get one soon.

OP if your water in Katy is like my water in Cypress you'll probably want one. I have hard water deposits everywhere after only about a year living here. I am worried about the damage it is doing to my hot water heaters.

Thanks everyone! This will be city water (Mud #14). The builder's charge would be $2,300. It sounds like the consensus is to use a 3rd party.

all of the research I have been able to do indicates that water in the Katy area (not necessarily this MUD) has a hardness of 127 ppm, or 7.5 grains/L although I have seen one report of 9.3 g/l. I have been in the Katy area for a few years and haven't noticed any hard water issues, but it is the "unseen" damage I am beginning to worry about.

Thanks again.

I use Kinetico which is fantastic system, no electronics involved. But is pricey.

I used belsomeh20installers.com. Installed softener and r/o system for a fraction the price the builder wanted. Been working well for past 1-2 years so far.
