We are planning to move to the Houston area in a couple of years. We have heard that bugs are a bit of a problem. What is your experience?

Bugs are everywhere. So, what is the problem?

There are about 10,000,000,000,000,000,000 insects on earth at any given moment. Seriously, that's a real number. For every one of us, there are 1.5 billion bugs.

Do you have to spray for mosquitoes, roaches, ants, etc.?

Having moved from Scotland we certainly notice a wider variety of bugs but nothing that has caused a 'problem'. The mosquitos bite but at home the midgies would have done the same thing.

Our pest service comes every quarter and 'injects' the house which seems to take care of inside pests. We did have ants coming in after a heavy rainfall last year but our pest guy came out and took care of it and we saw quite a few earwigs last year but again the pest guy came out and sorted them out. He also knocks down the occasional wasp nest and sprays around the perimeter of the house.

Outside we see June Bugs, Lovebugs and Crane Flies and the odd spider.

Thanks, Choc. Sounds like we're going to need a "pest guy."

Of course! Unless you want to live with them.
Our pest control services are very knowledgeable and efficient. They do a great job.

Outdoor: you'd need to spray yourself! Indoor: Besides spraying the house, you can minimize them by getting rid of carpet floors. Tile or hardwood floors will also help to keep the house cooler in the summer and lessen your allergy. Yep, another thing to look forward to getting...

When I hear the words 'Houston' and 'bugs' in a sentence, ants and spiders don't come to mind. Gigantic cockroaches do, however. I now live in a drier, less humid climate that doesn't have those shiny black bugs that fly when you spray them with Raid. Every time we return to Texas to visit I am always caught off guard by the roaches, mosquitos, and those noisy locust-like critters (it really is true that everything in Texas is bigger).

I have heard that the problem isn't nearly as bad as it used to be since wood shake roofs are no longer used in home construction. That's just anecdotal, though.

We spray the exterior perimeter of our home twice a year and use small bait/traps as needed for ants, etc. We also allow some of the little "housekeeping spiders" to do their work in isolated corners and window ledges as a natural form of pest control.

So far it's worked beautifully for us. Honestly, we had more problems back when we used to have a commercial pest control company come out routinely. YMMV.
