How would you install your 6x6 treated-wood posts for your patio cover (15x30ft, regular 2x8 and 2x12 beams and rafters)?

1. Would you stick 1/3 of the wood post in concrete, with some gravel on bottom? (picture below)

2. Or would you install bracket on top and connect a post to it?

3. Or you would suggest other options?

Thank you.

Not an engineer but we have DIY'ed 3 decks. Suggest footer, bracket, post for the best stability and longevity.

I'm a pro deck builder. I suggest a footer 3-4 ft deep with poured concrete around a 6x6. I would also suggest checking with your local building inspector. He might have a certain way that he would like to see it done. Good luck.

- dig 4 ft deep hole
(would you compact hole and would you put a plastic liner/moisture barrier at this point? )
- gravel pillow on bottom
- 6x6" footer goes straight down - no moisture barrier?
- Concrete goes on top with a slight hump

My concern with this method is, that moisture may get inside the footer and accumulate at the bottom. Over time (say, 10 years) it will rot the footer down.

What does your experience tell you?
