My husband and I have just moved to Houston 2 days ago. Tomorrow morning I start my new position at Waste Management (1001 Fannin). I live on the corner of Ruthven and Heiner. I’ve searched through the Metro website to try and figure out where a bus to the light rail would be, but they all show several blocks away. The thing is, the buses all line up on Heiner, just a few hundred feet from my house. I’ve called the Metro office and asked if I can simply get on the bus there, and if so, which one… but the woman didn’t seem to understand what I was asking and instructed me to go to Smith and Peirce for the bus there.

Does anyone know how I can get from Ruthven/Heiner to 1001 Fannin Street without having to pay a gazillion dollars for parking?

Thanks so much in advance.
Jenna

The Metro rep told you to go to Smith & Pierce because that's where the bus stop is located. It seems that you're literally 5 min from your new job and depending on what time you have to be there, it may be safer to just drive. My opinion is that Houston doesn't have much of a reliable Metro system in place, as compared to other major cities (i.e. Washington DC; NY; Miami; Atlanta).

I'm guessing the buses that are lining up near your place are the buses that are preparing to do the outbound park and rides (to the far suburbs) so they would not be applicable for your purposes.

It would seem crazy to live that close to downtown and then end up driving and paying exorbitant parking.

It looks like you are halfway between the 48 bus that runs on Dallas, and the 3 bus that runs on Webster (eastbound) and West Gray (westbound).

The 48 should cross Fannin right where you need to be. The 3 will be a couple of blocks away.

I would check out the walk from your house to both stops and see which one appears to be safer (maybe the 3).

You won't have to use the rail at all for this short bus ride. But it will access transfer to the rail for other trips to places further south.

Go to ridemetro.org to access the schedules!

Welcome to H-town!

I saw your area yesterday - you really ought to appeal to Metro to route a bus line closer - there are bunches of condos/apartments/whatever - that were not there at the time these bus lines were set - there should be a market for better service I would think!

Good luck!

Walk four blocks north from Ruthven to W. Dallas and catch the 48 Dallas bu east into downtown. Get off at Travis. The southbound METRORail Station (Main Street Square South Station) is literally a block away, on the other side of Macy's.

In fact, if you work at 1001 Fannin, you don't even need to worry about METRORail. Just get off (of the 48 Dallas) at Fannin and your building is maybe a block north of the stop.

Are you kidding? Walk. It's not that far. Laugh at the people sitting still above you on the Pierce Elevated as you go under.
