well when I crossed over on the aluminium aeroplane, the professors gave me hell for spelling centre, fibre, theatre or litre.

btw, when did we lose the 'a' in paediatric or the 'o' in oestrogen or manoeuvre?

It is all very confusing dialogue

I had licence to commit these spelling offences with the defence (later pretence) of being foreign.
