Hello All,

My wife and I are moving to houston in August. I`ll be working in clearlake while my wife will more probably work in downtown houston.

I would appreciate if you could give us some pointers on places to live/rent.

Clear Lake and League City are both great places to live. Clear Lake would be the most convenient for your wife to commute to downtown - League City is a bit (not much) further out. If you look in Clear Lake - the areas closest to freeway access would be those located off of Clear Lake City Blvd. Bay Knoll, Bay Glen, Bay Point, Pinebook, etc. If you like being in the middle of downtown near arts, theaters, nightlife etc. then you might like midtown or Heights and then you would commute to Clear Lake and she would have the close in commute. If you like a suburban area then Clear Lake would be nice. Lots of outdoor areas if you enjoy that - near the water so water activities, etc. are available. Lots of parks, nature parks, nice, big dog park, etc.

For a commute downtown from Clear Lake you can also take the Bay Area Park and Ride (Bay Area Blvd & 45) which takes the HOV lane into downtown and avoid the 45N traffic. My husband was taking the metro bus and wasnt too bad.

We use to live down that way when we were renting. We were quite happy with our apartment when we were there. You may want to also look into Friendswood. We have not been down there in years but when we were house hunting Friendswood was on our list as well.

If you have kids, I would recommend League City, Clear Lake or Friendswood for the schools instead of closer to downtown.

If not, I would say try live closer to downtown or maybe aroun Rice University/Med Center. The commute to CL will be opposite the rush hour traffic.

A neighborhood directly off Clear Lake City Blvd sounds like a good bet. The downtown commuter could utilize the Fuqua Park & Ride (off Sabo, near Carmax and the big movie theater).

Thank you all for your suggestions, doesn't the clear lake area flood a lot ? Also when we looked at the map of Houston, it seemed that Pearland was equidistant between clear lake and downtown, Does anybody have any views on Pearland ?

I like Pearland, but the commute won't be as easy. 288 is a bear in the mornings. The schools are decent. We have not had any flooding at all in the 4 or 5 years since we moved here. It looks like they are planning a park and ride within the next couple of years, but who knows.

I grew up in Pearland - while some areas don't flood, others do. Still a good area though. I think traffic is worse coming from Pearland (for both of you) but that is just my opinion. Unless you choose the area of Pearland that is on the Friendswood side - say off of Dixie Farm Rd. That area you would still use 45 into downtown and you'd have a short commute into Clear Lake as well. That is the case with most of Houston area though. If you look in Clear Lake - look in the Bay Knoll, Bay Pointe, North Fork, Bay Glen areas - all though flood insurance is required, none of that area has any flooding issues and easiest access sto 45 going into downtown.
