Hi All,
I'm in the process of interviewing with a maritime classification society in Houston. Does anyone on this forum have any experience working with such companies? Any thoughts on the maritime sector here in general? How big is it and also how closely linked to the oil/gas sector is it?

Please let me know.

Thanks.

Maybe if each of you were to share the sort of position you are interested in, you might receive some helpful feedback. Every industry, including maritime, has positions such as clerical, sales, accounting, legal, maintenance, etc. What makes maritime a little different is the addition of vessel positions - from deckhand to captain.

The maritime industry is as diverse as any other. International vs domestic, inland (river, lake, bay) vs offshore, tug & barge vs supply vessel vs tanker, etc etc etc.

Yes, maritime companies in Houston and the Gulf Coast are generally oil and gas service companies. On the exploration side, some maritime companies use ships to supply offshore drilling rigs with pipe, groceries, and various other materials. On the production side, some maritime companies use tugs and barges to move oil and other chemicals from point A to point B for the producing company. Customers include the Exxons, BPs, Shell Oils, as well as regional oil companies.

If I was interested in a new career in maritime, but knew nothing about it, a visit to the Maritime Museum here in Houston would be worth my time. It's close to the med center, and open weekdays. I would also do a google search for the words "marine" "tug" "offshore" "vessel" "houston" and see what comes up to look into.
