How do I fix torn shingles on roof ridge line? There are 4 of them, half of which were torn. Can I just buy a bigger patch, cover each of them up, and nail the patch down?

How serious is this problem? meaning how long can I wait?

If there are no spares available, try to get a matching shingle at a home store, then remove one of the damaged ones completely and see how it was cut from the shingle strip. Cut it the same way, tuck, adhere with roofing tar and tack. There are other ways, but that gets the job done. In general, when there is damage like this, a new roof is two or three years down the road.

You might find that you will need to replace all the single starting from the one on torn to the edge.Just pay attention to how they are cut.

Seems I don't need to replace the whole ridge. is this right?

---

  1. Cut a new ridge cap shingle to take the place of the damaged one. Using a regular shingle, start at the top of the weep and cut back to the top of the shingle at a slight angle toward the next weep. Cut the other side of the cap shingle by starting at the top of the next weep and angle back slightly to the first weep.
  2. Step 3
Insert the new cap shingle in place of the damaged one. Lift the corners of the overlapping shingle and nail the new one into place. If you cannot lift the corners enough to nail into the new shingle, nail through the overlapping shingle and into the new shingle. Cover the nail heads thoroughly with roofing tar to prevent water infiltration.

Kind of depends on what you mean by "torn."

Torn off by wind, and completely gone, is one thing. Cracks/tears is another.

There are some pretty amazing caulks/adhesives on the market anymore. Is it possible that you can essentially "glue" them back together and make it work?
