Does anyone have much knowledge of Icynene foam insulation? We have it in the roof and in some walls, and it seems great so far, but I am wondering if people have long term experience or knowledge of it.
We had a difficult time getting it approved because it is sprayed right on the underside of the plywood roof sheeting. It is a different way of insulating and you do not ventilate your attic. Your attic becomes conditioned airspace. the inspector was unfailiar with this type of insulation and insisted on a 1 inch gap between the foam and the wood. The manufacturer said that the foam would not insulate properly with a 1 inch gap, besides, the cost would exceed the value of our house. The inspector was finally convinced to accept the foam installed in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations, but we had to get a letter from the state.
Of course that means that when our roof sheeting rots out, we will have to replace the insulation as well. Hopefully that will be a long time from now.

No. This method does not get vented. You attic becomes partially conditioned space. If it was vented, you would lose all of your cold or heat. Vents were actaully installed, but the foam fills them in. I do not know what the moisture issue is, but since we have a very old house, we do not have the moisture problems of the sealed tombs that they make today. There must be an anwer to the moisture issue for new houses or they woudl nto use this insulation and they use it with some reguarity. It is a lot more expensive than fiberglass so it is not in widespred use, but it may be eventually.
