New cabinets with finished interiors. Debating over whether they need to be lined or not. The pantry shelves are painted wood and I lined those with a clear rubber liner. The cabinets, however, are a smooth finished surface. Does everyone still line their cabinets?
Canned goods can leak. I don't trust finished surfaces to survive tomatoes with chilis. Sometimes my stomach has difficulty.
HaHa Yes! They sure can. I don't keep food items in my cabinets. All food is either in the fridge or in the pantry. I did line the pantry shelves for this very reason.
The cabinets will have dishes, cookware, glasses. Drawers will have flatware, utensils etc. which will be in trays.
I didn't line the cabinets in the apartment I moved into last year. I just never store anything face down in cupboards. Even liners can get dirty. So, if the surface is one that's easily wiped down, I don't see that it really matters.
I remember growing up the inside of our cabinets were like raw wood. I also remember helping my mom with contact paper. What a mess that was! I can still vividly see the orange, gold and avocado green pattern! But they HAD to be lined. The interiors of the cabinets were not finished like the new cabinets of today are. Just not sure what most people do anymore.
I line the shelves for glasses and dishe in white. It makes it lighter in there, and the dishes, cups and glasses slide better on the paper than on wood.

No we don't line cabinets just the shelves in them. I wouldn't use sticky liners. They damage the paint finish and when you want to remove it later down the road the liner won't pull off in one piece. It's like wallpaper.
On the interior use rubber mats that have net-like patterned holes. These mats do not have to be stuck to the wood. They don't move around and you can remove by just lifting them up so you can wash them in your kitchen sink.
I don't line my cabinets or my drawers. I heard that bugs like to hide underneath and eat the adhesive. I'd rather be able to see what's there rather than imaging what's underneath.
