We moved from NJ to SC and went from gas/oil to electric everything. We now have a heat pump and even though I'm in a warmer climate, I'm cold in the house all the time. Of course not in the summer but this winter there were days it felt warmer outside then it did inside my house. When the heat comes on it feels like cold or cool air blowing most of the time. Is this normal? I keep telling my SO and he said it's because heat pumps just don't work that well compared to what we're used to. Is there maintenance we don't know about that could be the cause of the cool air?

SO is somewhat right-
Are you strictly on H/P, or do you have a furnance (stand-by source)? If so, you may not be putting enough load on the system for the stand-by to kick in. Or it may not be on.

It's just a heat pump. There is no furnace.

if it is an older heat pump (10 plus years) the temperature coming out of the registers is only about 90 degrees, which is of course cooler than your body temperature so it feel cold. Newer models should emit temps of about 105.(this is taking into account the emergency backup strip heat is not on which would push the temps to about 120)
Heat pumps don't put out high temp heat like gas furnaces do, but they still will heat your home just fine.

You could look at adding an electric reheat coil to the unit to help on the really cold days. As already said, heat pumps don't work very well when it gets below around 40 degrees or so, so you need a little boost to help them out.

Hello Rapture, I work in the HVAC field, a heat pump should be fine where you are, provided it has electric back up that is working properly. As someone else posted, heat pumps will not work that well as the outdoor temp really drops, that is why they need electric back up heat. If the temp outside drops , your system may be freezing and going into defrost mode, it will not heat when in defrost. I reccomend having the defrost controls and electric back up heat inspected just to assure it is in working order. It could be something as simple as a DIP switch on the thermostat being set in the wrong position. Good luck and stay warm

Do you have an "emergency heat" switch? That will fire up the electric coils on those REALLY chilly days. I have a heat pump and let's just say I am not a big fan.

i feel the cold also when it gets real cold. Do you have filters, see how dirty they
are. My heat pump in the summer was not cooling and i called the repair person-I
have freon, and had a small leak so they put some more in, then it worked ok.
my heat pump is a cheap builders grade which soon will need to be replaced. freon soon will be a thing of the past.
