My sister recently adopted a young pit-boxer mix and has brought him down a couple of times in the last few months to visit for the week-end. We have a cockapoo (less than half his size/weight) and the two really enjoy being together, playing, and running to bark at whatever goes on outside. The problem is that her larger dog really scratches up our wood floors when he runs around in the house. There is now an easily visible pathway of scratches from the family room to the front door that wasn't there before.

The house is relatively new. We have only been here a couple of years. The floors on the entire first floor are a factory-finished hardwood laid by the builder. Does anyone know of product or techniques that might clear the scratches or will we have to get them buffed out? If I purchased and laid one of those plastic runner sheets down on his primary path while he was here, would it help to keep him from accentuating his pathway?

For the future, I hate to tell her that her dog can't visit, but he is really hyper (in a crazy-friendly way) and vigilant on that door thing so he moves around a lot. After the first visit, we asked her to be sure his nails were clipped before he came to visit (and she said that she took him to the groomer and had them cut, which I believe) but he still scratched up the floor.

Any helpful ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

No you don't. Go to Home Depot, Lowes or any hardware store and buy some cabinet or wood floor filler. It's sold in different colors to match cabinets or floors. The filler I use came from the installer and is in a stick and looks like crayon. Fill in the scratches with the wood filler and just light buff over it. We had numerous heel holes in our new hardwood floors...I filled the holes with the filler and it cover them up perfectly. The filler I use is cherry wood and matches the hardwood floors.

If the scratches are not deep, they sell hardwood or cabinet marker that matches floor color. If you get the right color match you can color over the scratches with the wood colored marker.

Aggie are these deep scratches or just surface scratches on the clear finish?

The dogs need to have their nails trimmed regularly. they have grown too long if they are damaging the floors. Fix the problem then you can deal with the result.

After cutting the nails, the groomer needs to grinding them!
