Whenever we flush the toilet upstairs we hear a loud thump noise downstairs. To try to troubleshoot we shut off water to the tank and then flushed the toilet. We did not hear the loud noise. Any ideas on what is causing this and how i might fix it? Thank you all.

The waterline is "hammering". Somewhere it is not secured to framing- every time you flush the pressure inside the supply line moves the line, creating the thud/thump.

There's a couple of ways to fix it- determine the exact location, open wall or ceiling, secure supply line, repair drywall, paint. Or install a hammer arrester at the shutoff valve for the toilet.

If this is “new” and “just” started to happen, you might think about if the water pressure “increased” for some reason. Public water services might have made changes that increased water pressure that helped to start the hammering noise. If this is correct, you can add a pressure regulator at the location of where the main water line is piped into the house. Otherwise you’ll need to locate the source of the noise and as provide the hammer arrester as was mentioned in the other post.
