My house has a heat pump system. (Intertherm about 10 yrs. old). I've never had a heat pump before, am spoiled, formerly having a nice FWA system with built in humidifier and electronic air cleaner. The air is sooo dry in this house. Is there any way short of replacing the entire system for getting some humidity into the house? (other than individual humidifiers in each room ) thank you.

Yes. I have one. My heat pump system is from Carrier and you can even control the whole house humidified through the thermostat. It's pretty nice.

If you want to save some money, you could just put a humidifier in your bedroom, because that's where you will be for ~8 hours a night anyway.

At my old house I added a steam humidifier since heat pumps don't put out air that is "hot enough" to work well with drum/panel type whole house units. The model I had was a Skuttle F60-2.

That would be the way to go. We don't worry about not enough humidity as much because we live near a creek and have a gas cooktop and unvented heater for really cold days. Those appliances put out water vapor as exhaust.

BTW, no matter how you humidify, it takes energy. It WILL increase your heating costs.

Thank you all; I'll check into this further with a local HVAC company. Sounds like this is a pricey option upfront. I'm not really concerned about increasing the heating costs, the benefits could be worth it.

A stove top potpourri would smell nice too.
