We have Pergo floors. I mop them using vinegar and water but it smears terribly and the mop marks can be easily seen. Have cats and dog so don't want to use harsh chemicals. Is the problem the mop, the solution, or both?
I always vacuum first. Then.... I have a flat mop with a washable terry cloth cover, which I use. I spray window cleaner lightly on the floor and then run the mop over it. I try to mop in the direction of the "wood grain" to minimize streaks. Don't get your laminate floors too wet!!!

Yup, I vacuum first and sometimes dust the floor, too, before mopping. With the flat mop, wouldn't the terry cover have to be rinsed out often when mopping a huge area (like the entire house)? -
We Swifter ours. They have a cleaner especially for Pergo floors.
Hmmm...good to know. There are so many products out there and I miss seeing most of them because go through Walmart as fast as possible! Wonder how petsafe the cleaner is.
Thanks for the link. Hardwood floors are lovely--had them in my old house in Seattle--never had a problem with streaking. It must be the continual caliche clay dust coming into the house here in New Mexico's high desert. Keeping the house clean in Seattle was sooo much easier.
Most times streaky (and sticky) floors mean you are using too much cleaner (or in your case vinegar). Its hard to rinse away excess soap, especially on laminate floors due to their poor reaction to lots of water. But too much soap is the case with any kind of hard surface floor that are streaky and sticky.
I worked for a major cleaning company in college, and they always hammered it into you not to overuse soap, to use the proper amount. Its costly to overuse it, it doesn't make it cleaner, and much more work to clear away the excess. Its hard to figure out the right amount with vinegar, since there is no directions for use as a cleaner. Try using lessor amounts.

Not to worry, the Swiffer company and the ASPCA state that the Swiffer products are animal safe. Here is a snopes verification site with explanations about the product and it's ingredients.
